About Swanlake Gardens

Marius and  Mariana Lourens bought Plot 266, Kragga Kamma Road at the end of 2011 on an auction.  Although the buildings and garden were extremely neglected, the established plants, which included several palms, caught Marius’s eye.

Marius is one of the Eastern Cape’s leading fine artists and he started to work on a lifelong dream – to use his creativity and develop an exquisite garden with swans in a natural environment.  About 50 loads of debris from many years had to be removed and almost as many tons of soil was needed to create a totally new garden.  The outcome is a combination of a subtropical garden, a classical garden,  bush and a modern garden.  Several indigenous plants, like massive cycads, aloes, and strelitzias can be seen. Visitors will also find a vast variety of exquisite clivias and bromeliads.

Swanlake Gardens has become a real asset to Theescombe as well as the whole of Port Elizabeth.  Different swan species from various parts of the world,  together with some other exotic waterfowl, can be seen.  One of the special features of Swanlake Gardens is the “Bush Cathedral”.  Here the huge trees and different plants form a natural space where a wedding ceremony can take place.  A small function can also be hosted here with the sounds of various birds in the trees and a swan family in the background – as if this venue is not in the middle of a suburb.  Huge lawns provide space where families can relax and children can play. You will also find art pieces in the garden.  The hall can easily accommodate 120 people – and the couple’s  Bechstein grand piano adds extra flair to the venue. The deck area provides ample space to relax and enjoy nature.

Swanlake Gardens host a variety of functions, conferences, birthday parties, weddings, music concerts and photo shoots.
